RFID technology
Written by on December 17, 2007 – 9:29 pm -Radio Frequency Identification, the acronym for RFID Readers. Data is stored in RFID tags, which are then applied to products (such as animals or CDs) to identify them. The most common use for these RFID tags is on inventory products to identity products in stores. There are other uses for RFID tags such as in passports (mainly used in European airports), they have also been implemented into automobiles, these tags can also be added onto animals to identify them.
There are different types of RFID tags: passive ( tags that don’t have their own internal power supply), active ( tags that do have their own internal power supply), semi passive ( that has a battery to power their supply, somewhat similar to the active tags ), Antenna types, Tagging positions, Tag attachment ( which varies from implantable ones, attachable and insertion ), tagging position also varies (from the L Spot which is also known as live spot or D spot which is also called dead spot ).
There is some controversy when it comes to RFID technology. Because this technology allows people to track where one is located, what if it was applied on humans to track their locations and where they go during the day? There are some privacy concerns because of this potential risk. There is also another controversy with RFID tags and cancer, in the laboratory, they have discovered that the chips have induced tumors in the animals that were tested in the lab.
Here are key terms relating to RFID techology:
ISO 15693: What is ISO? ISO is a card that can be identified from a far distance. The distance tends to be larger than proximity cards. The ISO 15693 is read at a frequency of 13.56 MHz.
RFID Transponders - these transponders come in several types which includes, glass tags, cards, coins and labels.
SIM Applications - These sim cards are commonly used in mobile devices such as cellphones. As the technology of SIM cards have progressed, there are features that can be added onto it such as internet access.
