Some public opinions –most were that of religious Christians, believed that the Plague was the cause of God’s anger; a malformed result of divine punishment. These believers banded together to form the Flagellants, mainly abundant in parts of Germany, Flanders, Hainault and Lorraine. Flagellants could almost be considered a cult of people, traveling through the towns in attempt to give penance for public sins along with their own. This included severe and harsh treatments which were generally self-inflicting; some to the point of euthanasia. In addition to their acts of penance, Flagellants would put to death the Jews that they encountered as well as those who spoke against them.

Society tend to disapprove of the Flagellants and they were shunned by the pope in October of 1349. Authorities were enforced to suppress their ways and Flagellants drew quite for the time being, until their re-emergence in the 15th century from the rise of another plague.
